Detailed

pH test strips test method At present, the recommended method for determining gastric tube position is pH test strip. In 2004, the UK Medicines and Health Products Agency (MHRA) proposed using pH test strips to determine the exact location of the gastric tube. At present, it is considered that liquid can be extracted from the gastric tube and the pH test is acidic, which is the most reliable bedside method to judge the gastric tube in the stomach.

Clinical significance: Mean  of pleural fluid: 7.6

Average pH value of bronchial aspiration fluid: 7.4

Mean pH of gastric fluid: 3.53 (1-4)

Mean pH value of small intestinal fluid: 6.99

The pH values will be affected by: Certain diseases, such as pernicious anemia, as seen in HIV patients, can reduce gastric acid secretion; Drugs, such as pantoprazole, omeprazole, can increase the pH of gastric juice, but usually less than 6; Just finished feeding Duodenal fluid flows back into the stomach and is common in patients with serious diseases  Gastrectomy  15% of patients had gastric fluid pH higher than 6 (Metheny et al, 1993)
